Report states that only 6% of Local Safeguarding Children’s Boards are fully meeting the requirements of Government guidelines set out in 2009.
A leading provider of social issues training in Leeds and nationally; Basis Training & Education, supports the Government report, “If only someone had listened”, that tackles Child Sexual Exploitation in England. The final report of the Inquiry of the Office of the Children’s Commissioner into Child Sexual Exploitation in Gangs and Groups states that “serious gaps remain in the knowledge, practice and services required to tackle this problem. The final report launched yesterday by the Office of the Children’s Commissioner for England aims to improve the way this serious issue is tackled by agencies.
Basis Training and Education was set up in 2012 with Comic Relief funding by Leeds based charity; Genesis. Genesis works with young people within the Isis project in Leeds and vulnerable women in the city. Basis educates young people and the professionals that work with them on child sexual exploitation at all levels. Basis works proactively with Leeds City Council and other partners to address Child Sexual Exploitation within the city.
Basis Manager, Charlotte Nutland says:
“We are pleased that the report recognises the scale of child sexual exploitation in England today and we want to be apart of a response that addresses this complex crime. It also acknowledges the importance of education and training if professionals are to successfully identify, protect and support victims, some of whom are very young and vulnerable.”
”The report also emphasises that as sex and relationships education is not consistent or required in schools, “young people’s access to accurate information and spaces to explore the complexities of their lives and decision-making are limited”.
In response to the report in 2014 Basis Training and Education is looking to provide a month of free training packages for schools and young people and is currently looking for a sponsor to cover the costs of this important community education.
Since its inception in 2012 Basis has trained over 3,000 professionals working within the field. We’ve also raised awareness with over 2000 young people, is estimated that over 60,000 young people would benefit from child sexual exploitation education.
